*** TABOR UPDATE – 11/18/05 ***
The E-Alert Issue: The push to stop TABOR from coming to Pennsylvania is on!
Each House in the State legislature just passed bills that would place artificial caps on state spending. These limits, or caps, would probably result in cuts to important programs - from education, to community colleges, to child welfare and health care funding, to public transit and even to roads and bridges.
That’s what happened in Colorado until on November 1, the voters said NO, and lifted state spending limits for 5 years. Since 1992 Colorado’s spending limits have caused cuts in education, huge increases in college tuition, and reductions in health care services to children. Colorado has the highest percentage of uninsured children in the nation!
PROBLEMS DON’T GO AWAY WHEN THE STATE STOPS FUNDING – THE JUST GET WORSE. Reductions in state spending will simply shift responsibility to the next lower level of government. The Taxpayer Fairness Act, as it is called in Pennsylvania, will result in increased taxes at the local level and lots of pain for many communities.
The E-Alert Action Our legislators need to hear from you by Monday, November 21st – so please ACT NOW – TODAY. Contact your State Senator or Representative NOW by phone or e-mail. The message is:
“Caps mean cuts and we don’t want them in legislation or in a constitutional amendment. As your constituent, I urge you to vote against the Taxpayer Fairness Act which is not fair and will hurt Pennsylvania. Reject artificial caps on spending – vote NO on TABOR.”
Don’t know your State Representative? Go to www.vote-smart.org and enter your zip code on the left side of the screen to bring up a list of who represents you! Or, if you already know who represents you, but not sure how to contact them, click here go to the Pennsylvania General Assembly Website and look up your State Representatives.
