Philly students thank Council for $25 million – WHYY Newsworks – October 29, 2015

Philadelphia students visited City Council chambers with a sweet thank-you gift Thursday.

The students brought cupcakes for each member of City Council.

Donna Cooper, executive director of Public Citizens for Children and Youth, said the treats were in thanks for Council’s approval of funds for the struggling school district.

“Council did a tax increase. Council transferred $25 million last week. They have stepped to the plate,” Cooper said. “We need the state to do the same.”

Public school parent Gretchen Walker says that $25 million was urgently needed.

“For the most basic of supplies that every child should have access to — I’m talking about books, I’m talking about markers and pencils,” she said.

Walker said she and other parents hoping an eventual state budget will increase funding for the city schools.
