PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A bus full of young voters left center city Philadelphia this morning for Harrisburg, where they were meeting later in the day with state legislators to talk about education funding.

Hopping on a bus parked on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the fifty men and women who are organizers of this trip say they are young professionals rallying for fair education funding for Philadelphia schools.

Juliet Jacobs says they’re speaking out for students who may feel as though they have no voice.

“So, if we older folks represent them and speak for them, then I think they’re headed the right way,” she said.

Organizers say they’re bringing the message to 30 state senators and representatives.

Morgan Cephas, with the Philadelphia Youth Network (far left in photo), says city students need more resources than they’re getting.

“The majority of our young people, coming from an urban setting, come to school with two bookbags: one, a bookbag with their books, the other with issues that they’re dealing with in their home life, with what they’re dealing with in their neighborhood.”

And Jacobs says that what happens to one student in one neighborhood, at one school, can affect everyone else.

“If they are provided those opportunities, then the future of our city and state and eventually our country is headed in the right direction,” she said.
