Nutter names Commission on Universal Pre-K – The Philadelphia Inquirer – June 30, 2015

Mayor Nutter announced Tuesday the members of a new Commission on Universal Pre-Kindergarten, who will look at the cost, space and staffing needs associated with providing an education to all 3- and 4-year-olds in the city.

The Commission, which met for the first time Tuesday and are expected to meet monthly until they submit a draft report to the mayor in January, will be led by Co-chairs Sharon Easterling, executive director of the Delaware Valley Association for Education of Young Children, and Loretta Sweet Jemmott, vice president for Health and Health Equality at Drexel University.

The members of the commission are the following:

Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell; Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown; Catherine Blunt, former principal at Parkway Center City High School; Miriam Calderon, a consultant who was recently hired as senior advisor for Early Learning at the Maryland Commonwealth Foundation; Diane Castelbuono, Deputy Chief for Early Learning in the School District of Philadelphia; Donna Cooper, executive director at Public Citizens for Children and Youth; Rob Dubow, city finance director; Jennifer Duffy, principal at Henry Lea Elementary School; Michelle Figlar, Deputy Secretary of the Office of Child Development and Early Learning in the state’s Department of Education; Vanessa Garrett Harley, Commissioner of the city’s Department of Human Services, Alan Greenberger, city Deputy Mayor for Economic Opportunity and Director of Commerce; Reuben Jones, executive director of Frontline Dads, Inc.; Pheng, principal at the Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School; and Lisa Nutter, the mayor’s wife and president of Philadelphia Academies, Inc
