About The Picasso Project
The Picasso Project at Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY) increases arts education opportunities for students in Philadelphia public schools and improves the capacity of schools to provide arts education experiences. Since the Picasso Project was founded in 2002, we have provided $146,499 in financial support and technical assistance to facilitate school-based arts projects in 44 Philadelphia public schools, reaching 11,000 students. We approach the arts as one puzzle piece in the complete picture of a healthy child’s needs, integrally connected to her/his academic education, health, and family welfare. As of the 2006-2007 school year, 65 elementary, middle and high schools in the School District of Philadelphia have no music or art teachers on staff. Another 121 schools offer music or art, but not both. Recurring district budget crises threaten the existence of school arts programs in a city with rich cultural roots and an exciting arts industry. With your support, the Picasso Project can continue to increase arts education opportunities in Philadelphia public schools. Our combination of direct support to schools, problem-solving with school leaders, and focused advocacy work together with PCCY can assure that the voices and expressions of Philadelphia's youth are nurtured to their full potential. We invite you to join us and get involved in the Picasso Project!
