Support PCCY's 2008 Annual Giving Campaign

Philadelphia Citizens for Children and Youth (PCCY) is looking forward to a new year – a new agenda – and a new name – but our mission remains the same.  Our official name will be Public Citizens for Children and Youth to reflect our broadened work in the five counties to improve the lives and life chances of the region’s children through thoughtful and informed advocacy!  As you know, we have just celebrated more than 25 years of advocating for children.  During that time, we were instrumental in improving the health care, child care, educational and child welfare services for children.  We have consistently championed getting the lead out of kids’ lives, finding ways to provide free school transportation, small class size and accessible and affordable high quality child care for all children.  In the past year we’ve:

bulletHelped connect 1,400 children to much needed health insurance and dental care;
bulletHelped to expand the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), resulting in 4,700 additional children being insured throughout the Commonwealth since March, 2007;
bulletAdvocated and won free transportation for Philadelphia students to get to school;
bulletPlayed a major role in securing an historic increase of $200 million for early care and education in Pennsylvania. The increase established Pennsylvania Pre-K Counts, which provides high quality pre-kindergarten for 11,000 children;
bulletPlayed a key role in public efforts to encourage the School Reform Commission (SRC) to back away from plans to eliminate positions for teachers, nurses, librarians, etc;
bulletProvided children in Philadelphia’s public schools with arts and music opportunities through our Picasso project;
bulletDeveloped Behavioral Health Resources Guides in Bucks and Delaware counties connecting children and families to much needed behavior health services;
bulletSuccessfully championed the creation of a Youth Commission to give youth a voice in governmental decisions;
bulletChampioned improved school climate as critical to successful schools;

As you well know, there is still a lot to be done in order to improve the lives and life chances of the region’s children.  Our list of “Work for Kids” includes:

bulletExpanding our work in the region on behalf of babies and adolescents, insisting that all our children have a community that supports them in after school and pre-school, in health care, education and safety;
bulletWorking with organizations across the region to develop policy solutions to decrease incidents of youth violence;
bulletDecreasing class size in Philadelphia, which still leads the state in terms of the highest class size and working to resolve the problems facing students and faculty;
bulletPublishing and distributing Behavioral Health Resource Guides for Montgomery and Chester counties;
bulletWriting and distributing health care resource guides to reach over 4,000 school nurses and counselors in the five county region to help connect students to much needed medial and behavioral health services;
bulletImproving adequacy and equity in school funding and programming;
bulletReacting to issues that affect the well-being of children throughout the region through proactive advocacy.

Through your generous contribution to our annual appeal, you will be showing your support for the region’s leading child advocacy organization.  Your contribution will enable us to continue to speak out and speak up for our region’s most precious resource… our children.  We will continue to advocate for improved education, childcare and health services and improved quality of life for children and their families.  If PCCY is to help find solutions to the complex problems facing the region’s children today, we need you to join us!
